Subject: [1village] Climate Change and a) New/Emerging ICTs; b) Mitigation and ICTs: New Papers
To: 1village@yahoogroups.com

Two new papers on ICTs, climate change and developing countries are available online at: http://www.niccd.org/resources.htm

New & Emergent ICTs and Climate Change in Developing Countries by Stan Karanasios analyses the climate change application of new and emergent ICTs – wireless broadband, wireless sensor networks, GIS, Web-based tools – in developing countries.  It identifies major uses in disaster management and climate monitoring, and lacunae around climate adaptation.  It provides recommendations for more effective use of new digital technology.

ICTs and Climate Change Mitigation in Emerging Economies by Helen Roeth and Leena Wokeck identifies the need and opportunity in emerging economies for ICT-enabled climate change mitigation in areas such as energy generation, urban transportation and building, manufacturing, and international trade.  It analyses the challenges to this form of low-carbon development, and recommends necessary actions by government and business.

We encourage you to share ideas on ICTs, climate change and development via http://groups.google.co.uk/group/niccd and comment on key issues at: http://niccd.wordpress.com

These papers are the product of the University of Manchester's "Climate Change, Innovation and ICTs" research project, funded by Canada's International Development Research Centre (http://www.idrc.ca) and managed by the University's Centre for Development Informatics (http://www.manchester.ac.uk/cdi).
