CGAP - and no relevance to needs at Fantsuam June 17, 2011
Hi John and readers of my open letters at http://dadamac.posterous.com
Everyone - this email shows why we need online volunteers - we often find websites that seem promising - and need deep searching in case they might be beneficial to the people we care about.
John - Ref - CGAP and relevance to needs at Fantsuam

John - there is nothing.
The only good news is that I saved you from wasting your time looking through it.
Summary
It's a database for consultants (see details at the end of this post) - as far as I can see the only useful thing you could here is add your name to the list and see if you could earn some money for telling people what you you know - that is the only way I can see that you might raise some money to lend/give to the people you are trying to raise finance for !
As far as I can see there are no sources of finance for Nigeria - not for anything - never mind specifically for housing.
I kept notes of the site as I went through, so I'd know where I'd been in case there were good options to pursue.
Details of my search are below - the only other thing of possible interest is a site in East Africa looking for donations - a role model for your fundraising perhaps - if only you had the resources to get a site like that done in the first place (but I don't know if it successful).

Possible role model for getting funding
Village Enterprise Fund (VEF)
Type: Microfinance Institution, NGO (Local), Training Institute
Headquarters: United States
Leads to http://villageenterprise.org/ - is a fundraising site for a project in Kenya and Uganda.
Maybe one day you could get a VSO to do you a site like that to raise money for your projects - see their donate page https://npo.networkforgood.org/Donate/Donate.aspx?npoSubscriptionId=1004351

Here's a continuation of my exploration of the site (apologies in advance for any weird formatting as I cut and paste from the site for you):
At http://www.microfinancegateway.org/p/site/m/
- Mostly news, announcements, features, analysis, research, evaluations, pilot studies, introductions to the topic of micro-finance, recommended reading etc. It all seems to be more for researchers and/or newbies on this page. I can't see anything for a practitioners like you.
- I tried a search box for the library and a whole site search on "housing" - it's all just reports and stuff.

Better Shelter for the Poor: Housing Microcredit Responds To Their Needs
Sep 2001, Lindfield, M.
How does housing microfinance suit the needs of the poor?
This article discusses the utility of microcredit for housing requirements of the poor. It states that the poor require housing microcredit as they:
- Find it difficult to service the debt for even a small formal sector house acceptable to many financial institutions;
- Have no capacity to make regular monthly payments over a long period of time;
- Do not have the full legal title to provide the secure collateral demanded by traditional financial institutions;
- Are seen by these institutions as both expensive to service and high risk.
The article states that a variety of organizations have developed products and structures to provide housing microcredit. These institutions can be divided into three major categories such as those that have:
- Housing finance as one of their main product lines;
- A separate unit or subsidiary for housing finance;
- Specialization in housing microcredit.
It concludes that given the huge market, the potential for housing microcredit is great, but important challenges remain for organizations in this emerging sector of the financial industry and their regulators. Some of the challenges are:
- Balancing the affordability of clients and cost of funds;
- Balancing the terms of liabilities (capital funds) and assets (loans);
- Tapping sustainably the lowest possible cost, longest term funding from the capital market.
As far as I can see you'd be wasting your time here
I'll check the other links - but I'm not hopeful:
- Jobs - seems to be plenty of jobs (interesting mixture of research fellowships, consultancy, and service delivery).
- Training and events - plenty of courses and course materials and a smattering of conferences
- Organisations - that looks more hopeful
Newest organisations - The directory is updated every week, so you may like to check back here in future. http://www.microfinancegateway.org/p/site/m/organizations/
This week it has the list below following - I'll read through and add what I find:
Conclusion - nothing of any practical use to you
