Hi Fred

Thanks for agreeing to write some open letters to me. I think we made a good start this morning, building on our normal Google chats. This is an experiment where we will be learning from each other.

I know that I enjoy hearing your news and learning what you are doing, but usually I feel I must cut our chats short because I have other people that I need to write to as well. However, if we are writing open letters then we can exchange more information.

If you prefer to use Google chats to start with (instead of doing emails) that will be fine. If we use Posterous we can easily move our chats over there (I am doing that now - see http://dadamac.posterous.com/). Every now and again I can point to our collection of Posterous chats from my blog. We will experiment and see what is most comfortable for us.

Last time we chatted you said you had passed your exams but you would be working through the holidays. Perhaps you can describe more about where you will go and what you will be doing.

As we are just starting to do these open letters (and learning as we go along the best way to do it) I should just mention that I have a little worry. I am a bit concerned that you may have some false hopes about writing these open letters. I noticed that you asked for financial support in the chat, which you do not usually do when we are just chatting together. I was not thinking of this as a way for you to raise money.  I just thought it would be a better way for us to exchange information. It is not really a way to do direct fundraising. Of course it is fine if you mention your website, and as I recall you do invite support from people there. I think through your website is the best way.

Let us agree that when you chat to me I will always share with others now - unless you tell me that you need a private chat. Please confirm that is okay. I will not usually change anything that you write, but we can explain that you have to write in haste in a cyber cafe:

NB from Pam - I appreciate Fred's compliment, but I'm very aware that I have two important advantage when it comes to writing things for the Internet - I only speak one language (so I am using my mother tongue) and usually I get plenty of time to redraft what I write. Many people who write to me are writing in their second or third language They  are often writing in cyber cafes, where the keyboards are often the worse for wear, so keys stick - especially the overworked ones like "caps" and "delete". They are also working against the clock, like Fred, going back to buy another ten minutes in order to write this.

So.. Fred.. we will look out for each other again on google and chat some more, and share what you tell me. How much longer do you have before it is time to go back to college?
