Hi Paula (and readers of my open letters on Posterous).

Following my post on September 5, 2010 - Computer Recyling policies and workbooks you emailed about people in Rwanda doing work with local businessmen and wanting to promote Ubuntu. You wondered if there are connections with what is happening in Nigeria.

That sounds interesting. Would it be a good idea for us to have a phone call before the next UK–Nigeria meeting, so I can find out more about this, then I can raise your interests at that meeting under AOB if there is time. (I don't know if Bala will be able to make it to the Wednesday meeting, but as far as I know John will be there and he will know what is going on.)

Regarding open source, my recollection is that Ubuntu is in use at the Zittnet and Fantsuam site, but there is also pressure to deliver Microsoft related training. You may be also interested in discussion about open source from August First Thursday.

August 8, 2010 - First Thursday August - Conversation - Delayed Replies About Orphans and About Open Source

Some belated messages from Edi and Chollom came through after the main “First Thursday” conversation had finished. We knew there were minor delays and some glitches earlier - plus some interruptions from people who needed attention. We thought the FF people had been called away and did not realise they were still trying to join in.

  • Elaine, what would you like to know about FF open source
  • I can give you a brief on whaat we are doing on open source here at FF (Fantsuam Foundation)
  • All servers at Ff run Ubuntu OS,
  • early this year we setup a DB system for managing enrollment records at the Academy, its built on Php and Mysql.
  • we've also deployed LedgerSMB which is an opensource accounting software,
  • currently am testing out a new system for Microfinance activities, its called MIFOS,
  • we should be ready to deploy fully by nextweek.
  • open source is our theme song at Fantsuam,
  • however, one major challenge for us has been finding adequte and relevant learning materials , to eneble the academy teach opensource concepts.

If you want to explore some of these issues online with people in real time, maybe we could arrange for you to be a “guest of honour” at First Thursday in October. Information below taken from September 6, 2010 - September First Thursday - and looking forward to October

Next First Thursday

Next First Thursday will be October 7th at the usual time (12.00 GMT, 13.00 British Summer Time and Nigerian Time, 14.00 Central European Summer Time. 15.00 East African Time and East European Summer Time, 17.30 IST, and uncomfortably early in the morning for people in most parts America - our apologies for that).

Unless I have found some other solution it will be a Skype chat again. Please contact me beforehand with your Skype ID if you want to be included (my Skype ID is pamelamclean) then, with luck you can join in via my status bar like Elaine did. For people like Andy, who have trouble with that link,  I will try to post the url on posterous at http://dadamac.posterous.com/ once I have set up the chat.

Guest of honour

If you know you will definitely be joining us and want a turn at being “guest of honour” please let me know well in advance. Guest of honour is a role that one person can hold throughout the session, or it can be passed from one to another. It depends on how the session is going. Having a guest of honour is less formal than having a chairman and an agenda, but keeps the meeting more structured than having everyone pulling the conversation in various directions. Everyone shares the responsibility for making the guest of honour feel welcome and able to learn more from others in the group. If we know the guest(s) of honour beforehand it helps us gather others who are most likeIy to have overlapping interests.

Hmm–another thought ref First Thursday, and the late lamented worknets chat room. July 24, 2010 - Worknets chatroom code - seeking new server

Do you have any ideas about where it might be hosted?

These are my first thoughts about Rwanda Ubuntu and Nigeria. Let's keep exploring.
