Dear Reader,

The past week has seen elections in Nigeria draw to a close and the final preparations made in advance of next week’s elections in Chad - where incumbent Idriss Deby looks odds-on to stroll to victory. Also, prior to Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni’s swearing in, protests and the arrest of opposition leader Kizza Besigye only two months after he lost elections.

Nigeria’s election season has been seen as a success for the country. However, although a marked improvement on recent polls in Nigeria, the elections were far from perfect and risked being tarnished by an upswelling of violent disorder in the north of the country. And although tagged as largely free and fair for voters at polling booths, some have questioned whether new rigging techniques have come in to play.

In the coming fortnight, readers can look forward to reportage from South Africa, where Think Africa Press will be on the ground to cover the World Economic Forum.
