Hi Philip

I have been thinking about your CDE presentation about student profiling at Lewisham College  http://www.slideshare.net/CdeLondon/cde-presentation-5607624  and various related issues in Dadamac. Remembering our various snatched conversations on the way to tube stations I'm wondering if we could actually schedule a proper chat - phone or face to face - to explore some overlapping interests.

The focus would be student profiling - what are your present and future plans and how do they overlap with what we are doing/planning in Dadamac. If we do find sufficient areas of overlap, maybe we could start exploring some ideas around win-wins for future collaboration - but that may be too optimistic of me (though as you may realise by now that's my approach - big vision, small steps, gradual progress).

These are the kind of things I have in mind that the conversation might range over - depending where your interest  lead us:

  • Lewisham profiles
  • Moodle based profiling
  • Dadmac's use of Moodle and Drupal
  • Formal/non-formal studies
  • Formal/non-formal assessment
  • Self-directed learners
  • Open Education Resources
  • The CDE keynote on OU research on the use of OpenLearn and types of learners (volunteers and social learners)
  • Dadamac and the Knowledge Resource Centre (KRC) at Fantsuam ( http://www.dadamac.net/projects/education-and-training/krc )
  • Education, vocational training, and research at the KRC
  • Records of achievement at KRC - currently being revamped
  • Comparison with the NROVA - National Record of Vocational Achievement - that I recall from Youth Training Schemes
  • [PDF] Research Bulletin 20 - Profiles of Achievement: An investigation ...File Format: PDF/Adobe Acrobat - Quick View
Scottish and UK practice in the 1970s, 80s and 90s — NROVA, the NRA and ... Record of Vocational Achievement (NROVA) was primarily aimed at young ...
    www.sqa.org.uk/files_ccc/ResearchBulletin20.pdf
  • Personal anecdote related to value of Record of Vocational Achievement - resulting in someone I had asked to do some typing for me producing illustrations for Teacher Talking course materials
  • Training and records of achievement -  semi-serious introductions at Ago-Are (stages were "needs more training", "needs more practice", "competent - get certificate")
    • When I did the desk top publishing training course  - I only achieved "needs more practice"- but I did "get my certificate" for lighting the kerosene stove and "getting water from the well" (at my first untrained attempt the empty bucket floated tantalisingly on the water about six metres beyond my reach).
  • Possible use/adaptation of Lewisham profiling for KRC
  • Profiling - research and practice
  • Areas of overlap between the work at KRC and CDE on learner profiles

By the way - am I right that you know Elfneh Bariso? Many moons ago I remember someone - and I think it may have been you - saying that "the three of us" should get together sometime for coffee. If it was you, you may like to know that Elfneh and I plan to meet up on Wednesday afternoon - so, if you could get away, you might like to join us.
