Just home from the meeting advertised below (slight change of panel). There was mention of violence in Jos (the city closest to our friends at Fantsuam, Kaduna State) and in Kaduna itself. On returning home, I was horrified to see an email explaining that the violence (with guns) has reached Kafanchan, dangerously close to the main site of Fantsuam Foundation. As usual people are turning to John for help, seeking refuge and bringing people who have been hurt. May the president act swiftly and wisely to quell the violence before more people get hurt and more property is destroyed. May our friends come safely through the dangers they are facing.

Understanding Nigeria is essential to understanding Africa today. Oil wealth, fractious political dynamics, and an assertive diaspora make April Presidential, National Assembley and State Governor elections internationally important.

Dr. Ibrahim Jibrin - Director, Centre for Democracy and Development

Oba Nsugbe - Legal Advisor to Nigerian government on corruption

Richard Dowden - Director, RAS (covering the 2011 elections for Prospect Magazine)

Chair

Dele Ogun – author of Identity and Development: lessons from Nigeria for Africa and Europe

The speakers will assess the alleged degeneration of the electoral process in Nigeria since re-democratization in 1999, and discuss whether this election fits the trend.
