PRADSA friends and All

I am forwarding Michael Maranda's email below for two reasons - one speciific , one general:

Specific is because he says-
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So there are the basic outlines.  Making LIVE_Content available simultaneously in two formats - Audio-Video, and Audio-Only is something I have no experience with, and it is unclear if special equipment would be needed.  I don't see why a software solution would not be possible.
Also, I recognize that the One person, Two person, Three or more person scenarios are very different from each other in terms of the approach or complexity.
I'd prefer the bulk or entirety of the work flow to be possible with Open Source tools/platforms, as a matter of alignment of values... but my first question is whether any convenient tools already exist, and if not, how far off we might be.
General is because of the context, which is as follow up to October 9, 2010 - DIN and MovementCamp.org - from Michael Maranda
Current thinking is these will become monthly online events - next one probably just for four hours - I think date is Nov 14th - I'll be more accurate nearer the time  You may like to join this group.
Subject: [OK] Media Platforms/Tools for.... "How about collaborative rich (media) project?"
To: openkollab@googlegroups.com
Jay, Suresh, everyone!
I'm certainly interested to learn more about the platform for the Symbionomics project, it's stage of development, other needs in the development proces.  I'm working with an old friend trying to get a distributed media project under way (or brought back to life).  I was already trying to see to what extent that project could be brought into alignment with CotW/MovementCamp media needs, but we're trying to foster a local/regional component and until I have the basic updated sketch, I'm waiting on him.
For MovementCamp we have been outlining functionalities desired for improved media streaming and archiving.  For events we have had in mind live streaming and pre-recorded content.
We gather pre-recorded content in both single camera/webcam shout-outs and interview/dialogues (per skype) but we'd love to be able to record (as well as to easily stream live) more than two simultaneous parties.  In order to live-stream a dialogue we used JustinTV, but that meant that we had two separate streams, so piecing together dialogues for archive is a bit cumbersome.  This wasn't really the original plan -- we anticipated brief talks/introductions, and the two cameras via JustinTV were really there to make the switching easier, but it seemed to work ok as a pair of simultaneous streams.
Let me describe what I see as the workflow we want to have in the future.. Suresh asked that I outline this a little bit and I am sure it can be described better and also broken out into component stages in a better way. Chris Watkins and I have both been looking into this a bit since last week, and this is my first attempt at an outline.
PRE_RECORDED Content:
Single or Multiple Cameras -- Output to both a streaming Video Service, and made available in Audio-Only option
The desire for an audio-only option is an attempt at reducing bandwidth/processing power necessary to participate.
LIVE_Content:
Single or Multiple Cameras at different locations - Content Streamed live in both a Video format and an Audio-Only formet, Content in both formats available for archive ASAP, and also available for further editing.
So there are the basic outlines.  Making LIVE_Content available simultaneously in two formats - Audio-Video, and Audio-Only is something I have no experience with, and it is unclear if special equipment would be needed.  I don't see why a software solution would not be possible.
Also, I recognize that the One person, Two person, Three or more person scenarios are very different from each other in terms of the approach or complexity.
I'd prefer the bulk or entirety of the work flow to be possible with Open Source tools/platforms, as a matter of alignment of values... but my first question is whether any convenient tools already exist, and if not, how far off we might be.
Progress in any direction, or guidance as to where to investigate will be welcome.  If we'd like to establish a team effort towards these and related aims - that would be great.
Regards!
