It is with great sadness that I share this news regarding Paul Horan. I knew Paul through Coalition of the Willing and we have missed him there in recent weeks. As I was not one of his facebook friends I only heard this sad news today via Tim Rayner who said

Bad news all. Paul Horan has passed away. Suresh Fernando directed me to the following notice on his Facebook page.

In loving memory of Paul T. Horan (April 27, 1952 – July 30, 2011)

Paul Thomas Horan, age 59, died suddenly at his home in Malibu, California on July 30, 2011.

Paul was born and raised in Rockville Centre, New York.  He graduated from Brooklyn Preparatory High School, Brooklyn, New York, and received his Bachelor of Arts with honors from John F. Kennedy University in California in 1985. He went on to complete his MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas F. and Mary C. Horan, and brothers-in-law, Albert Barouh and Roger Beane.  He is survived by his brother, John M. Horan (Teresa), and sisters Elizabeth H. Barouh, Margaret H. McGuire (Gregory), Cecilia H. Beane, five nephews, one niece and many cousins.

Paul taught at the Waldorf School in Denver, Colorado and was employed by Alta Protection Services in Malibu, California.

Paul shared his life passions with gusto.  He was devoted to developing the Young Ecosystems Scholars Support Services program to promote ecosystem awareness and conservation for future generations.

He was an avid haiku composer and he shared these generously with family and friends. This was his summer solstice 2011 composition:

·     Trust catalyzes
our unique human gifts.
Open life's presence!

Paul is missed by all who loved his gentle spirit, wonderful humor and loyal friendship.

The family extends its deepest gratitude to Paul’s community of friends and colleagues in California for their expressions of sympathy and support during this difficult time.

Donations in lieu of flowers are suggested. Paul’s family will communicate specific information about causes important to him.

A future memorial service to celebrate Paul's life is being planned by his family on the East Coast.

It is a terrible shame. The world is a sadder place without Paul.

I echo that. I am still too moved by this news to share how much Paul influenced me and how much I appreciated him and the various "time for a cuppa" conversations that we used to have via Skype voice and video.

He invested so much time and wisdom into our group - as well as his emphasis on fun - and I am wondering how we can honour that and build on it - in addition to being grateful for what he taught us. I know that he has influenced me in positive ways that can never be undone - and I believe he has done the same for others. We are poorer for loosing him, but richer for having known him.
