Dear Reader,

After accusing the government in Botswana of ‘undermining the African agenda’ and being in ‘full cooperation with imperialists’, the disciplinary hearing of ANCYL leader Julius Malema has been embroiled in renewed controversy. Protests by his supporters in Johannesburg turned violent as police dispersed crowds using rubber bullets and tear gas. Elsewhere in South Africa, a recent report by Human Rights Watch has exposed the extent of exploitation in the country’s vineyards.

The Kenyan government has failed in its appeal to the International Criminal Court to dismiss the case against six high-ranking officials. The officials stand accused of crimes against humanity, following post-election violence three years ago that led to over a thousand deaths. It remains to be seen how this will affect the government’s international credibility. A move to review land titles acquired through local markets may have stronger effects on external relations, as fears mount that foreign investment could be deterred. One dimension of Sino-African relations is explored further in an article on the burgeoning automobile industry in Kenya.
